New Year, New Yogi: The Resolution of You

By: Jennifer Much

Now that the holidays have passed and the New Year has been rung in, not only do we refresh our calendars, but we need to reset ourselves, too.

How we begin the year can set the tone for the rest. Of course, we are accustomed to hearing others talk about resolutions; perhaps their goal is to drink less soda, save more money, or even to lose weight. But there's more to resolutions than that and we encourage you to highlight the most important one yet: YOU!

Throughout this three-part resolution proposal, you are hereby challenged to make this year the best one yet. Just as the moon has phases, so do you, and don't worry, we will be here with you every step of the way!

Phase I: Inner Peace
Forget deadlines and a busy schedule for a moment and take the opportunity to plan in time in your day to meditate and focus on your inner peace - a true deep state of calmness.

According to a recent Gallup poll, 70% of participants felt harmonized with their own thoughts and feelings. Interestingly, 61% report always feeling that same sense of peace, even during difficult times.

By finding contentment within yourself, you will be equipped with a vital tool that will help you throughout the year whether it be at work or in your personal life. Embracing calmness can aid in combating stress; something we all experience and know that can wreak havoc on our inner selves.

Try This:
  • Start each day fresh with a positive affirmation
  • Create a Worry Board and write down anything that weighs heavy on your heart - after taking a deep breath each time, erase each item
  • Looking in the mirror, say something you are grateful for every day
  • Attend a revitalizing sound bath with Jamie

Phase II: True Beauty
While it is true that they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, how we feel about ourselves can shape our attitudes. Most of all, it can determine how we project onto other people around us, and we want to project something beautiful!

Part of the journey of refreshing ourselves inside, will also include self care for the outside as well. Together, they are an elixir of empowerment!

In a national survey conducted by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, 64% of Americans reported that their self care routines enhance their self-confidence. Further, 71% experienced an increase in happiness and 67% recognized an upswing in productivity.

We are truly our best selves when we take care of our mind, bodies, and souls. Here at Roots Yoga and Healing, this circles our passion for wellness and helping you to thrive!

Try This:
  • Establish a nourishing skin care routine, a must in winter
  • Swap carbonated beverages for teas which are better for your teeth
  • Get a new haircut or head to the salon for a mani x pedi
  • Book a sound massage with Jamie to revive tired muscles

Phase III: Healthy Body
Staying healthy is important and caring for our bodies is a great component to any resolution. Whether your goals start small or the big picture is bigger, just start!

When it comes to the body, last year Drive Research found that 79% of individuals had a New Year's resolution that surrounded their health. This included mini goals to improve fitness, diet, and mental health collectively.

This is where yoga steps in and did you know it can help encourage a positive balance between ALL of those components? Best of all, it doesn't matter if you're a beginner or yoga guru; there's benefits all around!

Try This:
  • Sign up for a yoga class - we offer many at Roots!
  • Purchase a cute water bottle and be sure to drink up throughout the day
  • Eat a well-balanced diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Get enough shut-eye! This is one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of our health.

Between these phases, we hope you find yourself on a journey that brings out the best version of yourself. Remember, all great things take time and it's not a race. Ultimately, it comes down to meeting goals and celebrating yourself along the way. It's a new year, and what better time is it than that for working on a new you?
